Meditation Posture

A meditation posture should comfortable position. As a beginner, it is important to choose a posture that works for you. Do not get caught up in perfecting an exotic posture that is difficult, because each posture listed below is suitable for both profound meditation and those just starting out.

Here are some options:

Chair (Western)

Many find a western style chair preferable. This style is in no way ‘less than’ or deficient than Eastern styles. Using a pillow on the lower back aids with proper posture.

Cushion

If you are sitting on the floor (lotus position, etc.), you should use a cushion to raise your hips higher than your knees. This causes the lower back to arch correctly.

Kneeling

Some find this posture extremely suitable. Special mediation benches and cushions are made specifically for this posture.

Lying Down

Corpse posture or shavasana is excellent so long as you do not fall asleep. It may also difficult to practice this way in group setting (retreats, etc.) due to space issues. You can extend your arms and legs away from the body or keep them close.

Seated posture in a chair.

Posture with zafu and zabuton cushions.
